It is a noble pursuit to want to defuse a difficult situation, but one that demands humble awareness. The success of our attempt to bring calm and direction to an otherwise explosive and stagnant/regressive situation depends to a large extent upon our knowledge of it.
The clue can be found in the origin of the word, which lies in the act of defusing wires on live bombs.
Much like its origin, it pays to know what one is doing when attempting to defuse. Cut the wrong wire, and instead of defusing the bomb, you might blow yourself up.
